The Development and Application of a Narrative Therapy Program to Promote Adolescents Mental Health

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to see whether a narrative therapy program is effective to the mental health of adolescents. The subjects were 80 highschool students with serious level of depression and suicidal thinking (K-BDI adolescent, 16?N?63). The program was carried out twice a week, a 100 minuets for each time, 8 times in total from the 8th July to the 16th September 2013. A stress coping mechanism test, a depression test, and a suicidal thinking test were used as the measurement tools. By using IBM SPSS Statistics 21 program, repeated measure and analysis of variance were adopted to differentiate subject groups and time of examination. Scheffe test (p<.05) was also used as posteriori test for multiple comparison of the two. At the end of the program, evaluation sheets from the students about their changed thoughts and action were collected. The results of this study are as follow: First, The narrative therapy displayed a positive influence on students ability to cope with stress. Second, it also showed effectiveness on decreasing their level of depression. Lastly, effectiveness on diminishing students' thought of committing suicide was also observable. The narrative therapy program could be utilized as a precautionary and a developmental measure to improve mental health of the adolescents.
